What Is CIPP Pipe Lining?

Home / What Is CIPP Pipe Lining?

One way we approach pipe rehabilitation in Atlanta, GA, at Federal EC is with CIPP or cured-in-place pipe lining. In a nutshell, it’s an approach to restoring a cracked or damaged pipe internally. If you’re new to cured-in-place piping, here’s what you need to know about it.

CIPP or trenchless pipe lining is an approach to pipe rehabilitation that’s done by inserting a pipe liner into a pipe with cracks or other flaws. A thermosetting resin pipe within a pipe is inserted into the interior of the pipe. The end result is a smooth, brand new pipe built inside the existing pipe.

How CIPP Works

CIPP pipe lining works by internally restoring a pipe. The first step in the process is to inspect the inside of the pipe. This is done to identify the problem and determine how stable the affected pipe is. The problem pipe is also cleaned first to ensure that the new pipe within a pipe is tight fitting against the existing pipe with no avoidable deformities when the new liner is installed. The inflatable liner tube that is inserted in the pipe is what becomes the new pipe. Heat may also be applied to help with the curing or hardening process.

When It’s Recommended

Trenchless pipe lining is often recommended if the corrosion or damage to an underground pipe exists so that it is problematic and is causing maintenance or pipe structural concerns. In addition, the pipe must also be stable to allow for the insertion of the liner. CIPP is beneficial because it often:

  • Extends the life of older or damaged pipes
  • Fully restores normal pipe flow
  • Eliminates or Minimizes the need for significant repairs later
  • Preserves your landscape and other above-ground surfaces
